We start with sessions with owners and actual users to document current processes as they really run, not as they are assumed to run. Then we define users and roles, write use cases for each role, draw UML diagrams for the core processes, and produce a complete ERD with relationships and constraints.
The deliverable is a requirements document in plain language, with an explicit scope and out-of-scope list and an estimate of phases and duration. The document is yours: build it with us or with any other team. Many clients start with this service alone, to learn the true size of their project before committing a budget.
